GOOD CLINICAL LEADERSHIP – A VITAL SKILL FOR ALL DOCTORS
In the CQC “State of Care” report published on 15 October 2015, Chief Executive of CQC David Behan said: “The variation in care that we have observed is not just about the money. Good leaders are what make the difference – leaders who engage staff and people who use services and create a culture of continuous quality improvement…”.
The NHS Leadership Framework is a set of leadership competencies that describes WHAT every doctor should KNOW and DO to lead clinical teams effectively. The challenge is, to be effective you also need to know HOW and WHY! On this revolutionary course you will learn WHAT, HOW and WHY and then be able to DO. In just one day you will quickly and easily improve your leadership skills.

Background:
The report “Leadership and management for all doctors” came into effect in 2012. It sets out the responsibilities and accountabilities of all NHS doctors who work in or lead teams. It says:
“Most doctors work in multidisciplinary teams. The work of these teams is primarily focused on the needs and safety of patients. The formal leader of the team is accountable for the performance of the team, but the responsibility for identifying problems, solving them and taking the appropriate action is shared by the team as a whole.”
This means that all doctors are responsible for improving patient safety by working in and leading teams effectively. The new NHS Leadership Framework, developed from the Medical Leadership Competencies Framework (MLCF) tells doctors what to do to lead clinical teams effectively. The challenge is that knowing WHAT TO DO isn’t the same thing as knowing HOW TO DO IT, and WHY IT WORKS! That’s where our pragmatic leadership development programmes really add value, helping you build the skills needed to put the knowledge into practice. Invest just one day of your CPD time in your leadership development on the Demonstrating Clinical Leadership Course and you can learn to be a more effective clinical leader. In just one day you will improve your skills to lead and inspire your team.
This exciting one day training course is full of short, interactive sessions that not only cover essential leadership knowledge but also help you put it into practice. The carefully designed practical small group exercises will give you a deeper understanding of how to be a better leader in different situations and build expertise and confidence in your ability to lead. The course will also introduce you to Action Centred Leadership, an internationally acclaimed perspective on effective leadership which helps you to know what to focus on in the teams you work with, how to respond to the different issues and so how to improve the effectiveness of the teams. You will not only learn what to do in different situations, but also practice how to do it effectively, and most importantly, understand why it works. The short, interactive sessions cover the specific leadership skills you need to develop your confidence to be an effective leader. It includes lots of practical exercises carefully designed to support and consolidate your learning. You will know immediately what you have learned and how it works in practice. This one day course will provide you with:
- The skills to be an effective clinical leader
- In depth knowledge of Action Centred Leadership
- Written feedback on your leadership
- Reflective templates for you to complete during and after the day
- An action plan to apply your new leadership knowledge, skills and understanding
- A certificate of attendance.
